About
First Aid Courses
Under regulation 1101, the Workers' Safety & Insurance Board
in Ontario mandates that all workplaces have trained first aid employees
on site (www.wsib.on.ca).
Those with small numbers of staff may need an 8-hour Emergency First
Aid class. Those with more staff require Standard First Aid, which
takes 16 hours. Both classes include CPR. First aid training is
ideal for anyone wanting to know how to handle emergencies, whether
they occur at home, at work or in public spaces. These courses have
no prerequisites. They are valid for 3 years, although we recommend
retraining every 2 years to keep skills sharp.
ARC is an authorized provider of EMS
First Aid and Life Saving Society programs, both approved by the
Workers’ Safety & Insurance Board. For more information,
visit www.toronto.ca/ems/education/cpr.

First aid training can seem expensive, especially to small businesses.
How does this business cost translate to value? There are several
ways that managing workplace injuries through proper first aid saves
money:
- The injured worker must be paid for lost time
- New workers must be acquired and trained to replace the injured
worker temporarily
- High rates of injury result in higher insurance premiums and
WSIB costs
- Injuries at work may slow or stop production, often for long
periods of time
- Showing staff you care about their safety and well-being is
good for morale, and good morale is the basis of a successful
business. Bad morale results in slower and poorer quality work.
By training workers in first aid, we provide them with the tools
to both PREVENT workplace injuries and emergencies, and also to
MANAGE those emergencies to minimize cost to the injured staff member
and employer.

About
CPR Courses
CPR courses are shorter than first aid, and range from 2 to 8 hours,
depending on the level of certification and complexity. All CPR
courses are taught to Heart and Stroke Foundation and International
Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) standards. Classes are
divided by the ages of the patients - a short course might deal
with adults only, or infants and children only, where a longer course
would deal with all 3. Finally, Professional Rescuer CPR is ideal
for those in medical professions such as nursing who need to keep
up skills such as Oxygen Delivery and Bag Valve Mask ventilation.
We recommend annual recertification of CPR courses. There are no
prerequisites for CPR.
